M/V OMO: Tomb of Late Capt. S.A Omoteso, Ileteju Mopa, Kogi State Nigeria

Description:

This is a special project in memory of the Late World renowned Master Marina; Captain S.A Omoteso. The tomb is a reflection of the entire Maritime life of the Master Marina. The Tomb features a large Hull, typical of a Merchant ship. This is also the podium of the Tomb. The Hull reasonably cantilevers (850mm) over the actual grave, and structurally held together by two short concrete columns on either sides.

The grave is stratified into a lower, and an upper deck. This was a family request to accommodate the remains of his lovely wife of the late in future. The upper deck is designed to be accessible without affecting the earlier grave by way of construction planning. Typical of a Merchant ship, are its containers. The aluminium-composite in colourful containers can be seen depicted on the Hull over the Grave and aborted by a 150mm wall, that bore the bridge-like structure.

The bridge on the ship was where he spent most of his maritime life commanding large vessels across the continents. On the bridge is a reflection of the bridge windows by way of 150 x 100mm wall tiles. Right at the centre of the tiles is the Italian manufactured ceramic portrait of the late Master Mariner representing his command of the earthly vessel to its final heavenly destination.

Captain S.A Omoteso was among Nigeria’s maiden Master Mariners, and will be remembered for his professional contribution to the development of the maritime industry in Nigeria, and the west African subregion. He played an active role in the rejuvenation of the then Nigerian National Shipping Line (NNSL), formation of NIMASA, and the recognition of the African Master Mariners at the International Maritime Organisation (IMO).

He was a product of the famous King George Maritime Academy in Liverpool, the United kingdom.
